Toshiba Selects Trident's PanelTV™SVP to Deliver Home-Theater Quality Video in Their Line of Dynabook Notebook PCs

Sunnyvale, California. June 1, 2004:

Trident Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=trid&d=t">TRID – href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q/h?s=trid">News), through its subsidiary Trident Technologies Inc., the worldwide leader in providing cutting-edge digital TV technology for the consumer digital video marketplace, announced today that Toshiba has selected Trident's PanelTV™SVP chip to deliver home-theater quality video for multimedia PC applications on Toshiba's line of Dynabook Notebook PCs. Featuring Trident's DCRe™ technology, the newest Toshiba Dynabook Notebook PCs offer the highest quality picture images with vivid cinema-realistic motion and still video images for all multimedia applications for the PC.

"The fusion of the computer and consumer digital media has long been anticipated. We are very excited to collaborate with Toshiba's initiative to bring consumer LCD TV quality into their mainstream Dynabook consumer notebook product line. We are also very honored that our PanelTV™SVP has been chosen for its highest integration level and the best video quality to fulfill Toshiba's vision. Toshiba's notebook PCs have long been recognized for its innovative designs and outstanding multimedia capabilities. The high integration level of the PanelTV™SVP chip made it possible for Toshiba to implement their stringent and compact notebook PC design requirements,” said Dr. J.H. Chang, president of Trident Technology Inc. “With the advent of digital video broadcasting and the popularity of digital audio distribution on the web, the competitive landscape of the consumer PC market is undergoing a big change. More consumer audio/video features will find its way into consumer PCs. We are very confident that with our DCRe™ technology in the PanelTV™ and DPTV™ product families and our HDTV SOC solution in the HiDTV™ product family, we can continue making inroads into major PC OEMs as they search for high quality and highly integrated multimedia features to differentiate themselves in this dynamic consumer PC market space.”

Trident's PanelTV™SVP integrates an advanced fourth-generation 3-D digital comb video decoder for NTSC, PAL, and SECAM formats. Trident's 3-D digital video decoder reads consecutive horizontal scanning lines within each video frame, making corrections as it goes, to ensure maximum picture detail and resolution. Based on Trident's proprietary unified memory architecture (UMA), the PanelTV™SVP digital comb video decoder requires no extra frame buffers for performing 3-D comb filtering. This feature translates into further cost savings for the TV OEMs. With film-mode recovery, PanelTV™SVP correctly detects the frame sequence of the incoming video sources, and then dynamically restores the video source to the original film sequence in playback eliminating the artifacts found in the process while converting typical interlaced signals to progressive signals. The motion adaptive de-interlacing and edge-smoothing features of the PanelTV™SVP refine the video display quality. The PanelTV™SVP also enables SDTV signals to display in Picture-In-Picture mode, Picture-Out-Picture mode, and 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio modes. Furthermore, the PanelTV™SVP supports non-linear scaling in the panorama mode to ensure the most natural picture aspect ratio for the viewers. PanelTV™SVP's integrated 3-D digital comb video decoder also has a built-in VBI circuit for Closed Captioning and V-Chip for parental control that is EIA 608 compliant.
