Toshiba's Qosmio™ AV Notebook Uses Trident's PanelTV™ SVP Video Processor

Sunnyvale, California. August 6, 2004:

Trident Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Trident Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRID href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q/h?s=trid">News) and a worldwide leader in developing leading-edge digital TV technology for the consumer digital video marketplace, today announced that Toshiba Corp., one of the world's leading notebook PC OEMs, is using Trident's PanelTV™ SVP video processor in its ground-breaking Qosmio™ AV notebook.

"The PanelTV™ SVP has enabled Toshiba to deliver an uncompromised, exceptionally high-quality TV experience with their Qosmio™ AV notebook. Trident's DCRe™ engine provides authentic advanced TV video processing to make the most of Qosmio™'s high-brightness, high-resolution display. The single-chip design of the PanelTV™ SVP saves significant power and board space. Also, our flexible programming architecture allows Qosmio™ users to watch TV or DVDs without booting Windows," said Dr. J.H. Chang, president of Trident Technologies Inc. "The growth of the AV notebook market depends on solid consumer acceptance of the product concept and exceptional video quality is fundamental to that acceptance. If AV notebooks are just ten percent of notebook volume, that's already a five million unit market next year." Dr. Chang continued, "We are a pioneer and the leader in this exciting space. It is an excellent additional market that will accelerate our growth as the advanced TV solution leader."

Trident's PanelTV™ SVP video processor features the award-winning Digital Cinema Reality engine (DCRe™) which includes an advanced 3-D digital comb color decoder, pixel-perfect motion adaptive de-interlacing, vertical and horizontal sharpness enhancement, object-based intelligent digital noise reduction, dynamic Average Picture Level (APL) feedback to enhance video dynamic range, and the DETI engine to provide vivid colors. The PanelTV™SVP integrates an advanced fourth-generation 3-D/2-D digital comb video decoder for NTSC, PAL, and SECAM formats. Based on Trident's patented proprietary unified memory architecture, PanelTV™ SVP's digital comb video decoder does not require an extra frame buffer for performing 3D comb filtering. With film-mode recovery, PanelTV™ SVP correctly detects the frame rates of incoming video sources, and then dynamically restores the video source to the original film mode sequences for playback. The film-mode recovery of PanelTV™SVP eliminates the artifacts found in a typical interlaced signal to progressive conversion process. The motion adaptive de-interlacing and edge-smoothing feature of the PanelTV™ SVP refines the video display quality. The PanelTV™ SVP enables a SDTV signal to display in Picture-in-Picture mode, Picture-Out-Picture mode, and 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio modes. PanelTV™ SVP supports non-linear scaling in panorama mode to ensure the most natural picture aspect ratio for the viewers. PanelTV™ SVP's integrated 3-D digital comb video decoder has a built-in VBI slicer and decoder for closed caption and V-chip parental control that is EIA 608 compliant. Furthermore, PanelTV™ SVP's graphic-based on-screen display enable an exceptionally user-friendly and graphically-oriented TV menu control. Both interlaced and progressive-scan video output are supported

Launched on August 6, Toshiba's Qosmio™ is a highly integrated, mobile personal entertainment and computing device that offers users a unique "four-in-one" experience with TV, audio, DVD recorder and PC functionality.
