TRIDENT AND VIEWSONIC PARTNER TO MOVE DISPLAYS FROM TRADITIONAL TO EXCEPTIONAL

Video Tuner Box Transforms Desktop Displays into Digital Entertainment Displays

Sunnyvale, Calif. August 29, 2002:

Trident Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRID), a worldwide leader in Digital TV technology, today announced that its DPTV™MV video processor chip has been selected for use in ViewSonic® Corporation's NextVision™ 5 video tuner boxes. Powered by the DPTV™MV video processor, NextVision™ 5 enables consumers to use their existing displays for digital entertainment, including Enhanced Digital TV (EDTV). Trident's DPTV™MV converts today's analog TV signals into an advanced progressive TV image up to 1024×768 resolution.

“ViewSonic has recently achieved a milestone in digital TV. The NextVision™ 5 video tuner box provides the most cost-effective method for extending today's displays into tomorrow's digital TVs,” said Dr. J.H. Chang, president of the Digital Media business unit of Trident. “Trident sees a strategic and close partnership with ViewSonic in its endeavor to develop the NextVision™ product using Trident's DPTV™MV solution. Both companies share the same vision and strong commitment to bring digital video to the masses.”

NextVision™ 5 provides consumers with an affordable option for viewing high-quality TV and digital entertainment on any display that supports up to 1024×768 resolution-including CRT monitors and LCD displays, projectors, or plasma screens. Features include a 181-channel TV tuner, 3:2 pull down correction to improve the quality of DVD movies, as well as the ability to easily connect to DVD players, VCRs, video camcorders and high-resolution game consoles, such as the Microsoft® Xbox™, Sony Play Station® 2, and Nintendo Game™ Cube.

Trident's DPTV™MV integrates an advanced programmable digital video decoder for NTSC, PAL, and SECAM formats, along with its proprietary Unified Memory Architecture (UMA), which eliminates the need for additional frame buffers for performing comb filtering. DPTV™MV is equipped with pixel-based motion adaptive de-interlacing, frame rate conversion, and film mode support for DVD movies. With all these advanced video-processing features, NextVision™ 5, powered by DPTV™MV, offers the best video quality on ViewSonic CRT and LCD monitors.

“The convergence of digital entertainment with high-quality display has prompted us to search for the best digital TV video processor technology to match the quality of our display,” said Gene Ornstead, director of business development, Advanced TV Products, ViewSonic Corporation. “Trident plays an important part in enhancing the visual experiences of our customers.”

The NextVision™ 5 is available now through authorized ViewSonic retailers, value-added resellers, and mail order channels for $149 (ESP). It is backed by a one-year replacement warranty and toll-free technical support, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
